Already a team member, Becky Raven-Smith was overjoyed when we introduced a new recruitment method. ‘Recruit for Attitude’ allowed her talents to shine and helped Becky find her perfect role at SSHA.
Becky is a great example of what happened when we radically changed our recruitment process. As part of the Human Resources team at Housing Plus Becky felt she had more to offer, but was anxious about formal interviews. So when we presented the concept of ‘Recruit for Attitude’ she was delighted.
Jan Goode, Assistant Director of Corporate Services explains, “A formal, panel based interview only assesses someone’s technical abilities. It doesn’t give a flavour of personality or show where they’d flourish. So an Occupational Psychologist helped us develop Recruit for Attitude. A series of practical tests, which highlight a variety of skills. This also allows us to make sure a person shares our values, which is just as crucial as having the ability to do the job.”
We identified Becky’s great leadership skills which are perfect for the role she was applying for, Neighbourhood Involvement Officer with SSHA. Becky believes, “People get a more rounded opinion of you and the practical tests are great, they really keep you on your toes.”
Becky is now on-site working with the community, “Now I work with residents rather than staff. I get them passionate about things we can offer, then they feel positive about changes. I think it’s because we listen rather than assume what they want.”
Her most rewarding project was at Elder Grove, Wombourne. “I involved the residents from start to finish. We discussed what improvements they’d like and what was possible. They agreed to maintain the work done and take responsibility for communal areas. It’s a great step forward and they really do look after it.”
Resident Sarah Baynham remarks, “Becky’s co-ordinated us setting up a mini youth group. She wanted the kids to have their say too. Becky’s been brilliant. She’s the driving force.”
