Case Studies

Our commitment to making a difference not only allows us to focus as intensely on issues affecting wider communities but those affecting individuals too.

This was demonstrated in Swindon where we were able to work with partners to offer even greater benefits for our tenants. Using the influence and reputation of the Housing Plus Group we were able to identify a need for and develop 14 homes in the picturesque village. This project was ground-breaking as the homes are built on the first rural exception site in South Staffordshire. Their design is unique and sympathetic to surrounding village properties. Each home provides an affordable, high spec property that only local people can enjoy.

This bespoke development was so specific it highlighted a demand which we met to the exact requirement of the villagers. For instance, we identified a need for two bungalows. One was to house a couple with disabilities. The bungalow was built with qualities like level access and internal adaptations to make life easier for Mr and Mrs Chilton and ensure their independence.

Ursula Bennion’s team helped rehouse the couple and they were delighted with the quality of the build and the attention to detail. Mrs Chilton said, “Oh it’s fantastic. We’ve never lived in a brand new house and it’s just the job. We were worried we’d be forced to move away from our families. Well we’d never cope without our daughter.”

Such adaptations are a core skill of Housing Plus. As a result, their old home became available for another family who otherwise would not have been able to continue living in the area.

Creating a Rural Exception site is quite an achievement that’s not only groundbreaking, but also ensures the village is sustainable and has a thriving future.
